100% quality quilting cotton is still the best fabric for quilters, as it has numerous benefits. This type of cotton shrinks considerably less compared to other types of cotton, giving you the best value for money. It is also very colourfast, this means that your quilt is less likely to bleed colour when you wash it for the first time. Washing usually isn’t needed for quality fabrics, but if you are mixing new with old, or purchasing from other less reputable places, you may need to prewash. Slight shrinkage may occur, but again, if purchasing all at the same time and you are using the same quality, then you shouldn’t notice this at all. If you are worried about colour bleeding ie have lots of bright colours with your whites, then testing for colour bleeding is recommended prior to sewing.
